Whether you have previous experience or none at all, you are welcome to come learn at the Calgary Martial Club.
What ages can train?
Calgary Martial Club is open to adults aged 18 and over. While occasional exceptions may be made for some teenagers with parental permission, we do not have separate child/youth classes.
What kind of uniform do I need?
Calgary Martial Club does not have a formal uniform. A light tee, a comfortable pair of pants, and a pair of indoor shoes are all you will need to get started. Otherwise, come with what you may wear to the gym.
Due to the nature of our training, it is not recommended that you wear something with a low neckline or long sleeves. When it comes to graphics and symbols, keep it classy – you be the judge.
What about belts and rankings?
While the Calgary Martial Club does have a curriculum that everyone will go through, we do not have any formal ranking or belts.
What is this all going to cost?
Everyone starts off on a trial period that consists of three free classes! Come learn as much as you can before any commitments.
Afterward, choose from flexible payment options, ranging from $20 to $30 per class, depending on your preferred plan. No long-term fixed contracts – cancel anytime hassle-free. Classes run for 3 hours every Tuesday.
What’s the difference between Wing Chun, Ving Tsun, Wing Tsun, ETC?
All of these spellings are essentially different romanizations of the same name, with ‘Wing Chun’ spelling being the most common. ‘Ving Tsun’ was the spelling used by Yip Man and his senior students when they formed the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Hong Kong.

I’ve gotten a little out of shape.. will that be a problem?
Not at all. Wing Chun is relatively easy on the joints and we aren’t going to get you doing the splits or anything. Everyone is allowed to progress at their own pace and we will do our best to accommodate any physical limitations.
Will there be sparring?
Yes and no. Beginners at the Calgary Martial Club will start off right away with partnered drills but will not engage in sparring activities until they have a few tools under their belt. Additionally, no one is under any obligation to spar if they do not wish to.
Is training painful?
Training at the Calgary Martial Club is done in a controlled environment. When practiced appropriately, barring any health conditions you have that may limit you, our drills can be quite safe and a lot of fun. We will build you up through our curriculum and prepare you for our more physical drills.
With that said, due to the nature of martial arts, like most physical activities and sports, there is always the possibility for accidents and injuries to occur.
